Day 16-19: Favorite Era

Me and Lauren This post deserves four days in itself so we should call it planned and not procrastinated.
It is funny looking "back in the day" as Carley would say and see how life was so simple then compared to now- I have searched through pictures, music, tv shows and I truly get EXCITED about all of it- I love love love love love the eighties era and some may call it an error but man oh man: Those were the days !!!
The bus would pick the neighborhood kids up early in the am- the parents trusted us to man the bus stop alone- we/ I had an absolute ball at school. I went for socializing purposes of course- I did all of my homework on the bus ride home so I could play outside until my mom would switch the flood lights on and off for my brother and I to come in. I remember my lunch box like it was yesterday- I always got my brothers hand me downs so it was a metal Incredible Hulk- and I rocked like the tomboy that I was.
Let's go back to 1989
Day 16: What was your favorite music ?
I was eleven: it seems hard to grasp that those numbers calculate to 21 years ago- I can tell you that every and I mean every Friday night Lauren and I hit the skating rink- our parents car pooled the drop off and pick up - you could actually drop off your kids back then with no exposure to drugs, violence, foul language... we sported our "boofont" hair- we sped through the rink like the speed demons we were forwards and backwards and our hair stayed in tack!
We jammed to GREAT great music- music that still takes me back to remember the days:
........Warning.......... these lyrics may be stuck in your head for the rest of the day
My Prerogative (Bobby Brown); Every Rose Has Its Thorn (Poison); Straight Up (Paula Abdul); Lost in Your Eyes (Debbie Gibson); I'll Be There For You ...these five words I swear to you when you breath I wanna be the air for you.... I'll Be There For You (Bon Jovi); Wild Thing (Tone Loc); When I See You Smile (Bad English); Love Shack (B 52); Hangin Tough (New Kids On the Block); Paradise City (Guns N Roses); Girl Im Gonna Miss You (Milli Vanilli) Express Yourself (Madona); Ice Ice Baby (Vanilla Ice)....
I said things like... "word to yo mother"; "2 legit to quit;" but my favorite was......."whatever"
I owned things like CABOODLES; blue eye shadow; a record player with cassette; Aqua Net hair spray; jelly shoes; spray painted t-shirts that you could only get at the fair once a year, and Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth Perfume.....
and just so you know my first concert was New Kids On the Block- and it was awesome!!!
Day 17: What did we do for fun?
We played our little hearts out!! I grew up in a small neighborhood that produced a mass amount of play mates- Husband and I grew up together all of our life- we were and our parents still are neighbors which makes visits these days way easy- but back to those days.....
Brother and I had an Atari- yep!! We had three games: Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Mario Brothers.... the board games I remember playing over and over are Monopoly, Scrabble and Yahtzee, we fought over the Rubik's cube and argued when we played Uno- we normally saved the inside games for rainy days or after dark hours because it was hard to get us to come inside. We built forks in the woods- chased wild animals- rode our bikes one mile to the store and could get 100 pieces of candy with just $1.00. The store "on the hill" was owned by Mr. Mac and he loved to see the kids come in for an ice cold bottled coca-cola. My bike was purple with a basket and streamers on the front. (Note to mother in law: we teased Husband because he wasn't allowed to ride his bike with us: he would meet us at the circle with his money and ask us to get him some candy-he waited patiently (not) for us to return- and the answer is NO I would never let Carley do that today) but then, life had no worries at least I don't remember any- we lived next to an abandoned barn and the kids (minus Husband) would climb to the third floor, slide down the tin roof and land in a big pile of hay- those were the days.....
Day 18: What were your favorite TV Shows "back then"?
They just don't make shows as good as they used to- brother and I brought pillows into the living room and vegged out in front of the old school tv that took up an entire corner- and it was adorned with rabbit ears with tin foil- I know I'm about to muster up some memories...
......... Warning.......... list of shows may create wild madness to search Amazon for the series and purchase for yourself or a friend..... and just in case you're wondering I'm adding Punky Brewster to my wish list this year
227; The A-Team, Alf, Baywatch, Charles in Charge, The Cosby Show, Dukes of Hazzard, Family Ties, Fraggle Rock, Gimmie A Break, The Golden Girls, Growing Pains, Punky Brewster, The Jeffersons, Kids Incorporated, Knight Rider, Mama's Family, Pee-Wee's Playhouse (yes I did), Press Your Luck (best game show e-ver), Reading Rainbow, Smurfs,Who's The Boss
My room was covered in YM magazine tear outs of Kirk Cameron!!!! Ooo la la... and I walked around a lot interpreting Pee Wee's laugh- and pestering Brother about Pee Wee's word of the day-
Day 19: What were your favorite movies in the 80's era?
Brother worked at a video store "Henry's" and so we were able to see most everything as soon as it released....I can tell now that by looking at my list most of my favorite movies most probably were influenced by Brother but they ARE so good-
E.T., Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Crocodile Dundee, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Karate Kid, Rocky, Top Gun, Sixteen Candles, Splash, Steel Magnolias, Annie, La Bamba, BeetleJuice, Can't Buy Me Love, Cocktail, Dirty Dancing, Fame, Fire Starter, Gremlins, Lethal Weapon, Look Who's Talkin, The Little Mermaid, TeenWolf, Vacation
Can you guess which movie I begged Brother to bring home every weekend because I could watch it a thousand times over and over and I even own it on DVD today?!? ...... if you said Splash you are correct!
Don't you just feel 21 years younger now that we ventured down memory lane?!? What was YOUR favorite music, show, movie, memory of this era?!?
Note to reader (mother in law) if you click the hi-lighted words it will take you to the link....wink wink
Pretty sure you are all smiling right now....because you know what I know.....
Those were the days!!

You are a MESS!!! I do remember that little girl with the curly hair that used to ride her bike and come over to the house too! I loved you way back then (even if you thought that my most adorable, cute, loving son's parents were so mean not to allow him to ride to the store on his bike), and I can't help but love you more and more every day! I repeat--- YOU ARE A MESS!

    Love U BUNCHES!
    Your loving mother in law!!!
