Find a penny, pick it up.....

I worked through the day yesterday never stepping foot outside until it was time to say goodbye to the workplace and hello to the commute.  As I stepped out of the office doors, the sun shone down and there at my very feet was a pretty penny.  Today we do not place much value on a penny, but I remember the day when my mom would take us to the 1 cent candy store to buy up all of the sugary earthly treasures and I was literally like a kid in a candy store.

The vague memories flashed by as I stopped and stared at that penny- the days when brother and I would ride the school bus home, do our homework on the bus ride home so that we could have ample amount of time to play outside. We would play until five o'clock and ride our bikes home as fast as we could peddle them- to ensure at the very last minute we had all of our chores done so that our mom would be pleased when she got home and would take us to the candy store.

Now, the store itself was down an old dirt road and on each side of the dirt road were glorious gardens of vegetables.  The candy sat in an old white cinder block house with a grey cement floor.  There were wire baskets full of candy all eye level for this little seven year old but my all-time favorite was Lotsa Fizz.
Brother was always smarter than the average bear.  He would buy his candy for one penny and sell it on the bus for 10 cents.  He bought the candy to sell it- and shopped the candy store with his profits. I bought the candy to eat every bit of it and shopped the candy store with the money I would charge brother for his share of the chores.  He would sucker me into doing his chores for 1.00, but my mind would register 100 pieces of CANDY!!

When I looked down at that pretty penny yesterday all of the memories came flooding back. I picked up the penny, smiled, checked the year to see if it was my birth year and read those glorious words "In God We Trust"- and I nodded indeed I do Lord--- indeed I do!
