Does the wind set sail and send you in different directions of this life?
Is the way of the wind the only thing that guides you from shore to shore?
Our pastor is preaching from the book of Hebrews for Sunday sermons.
Hebrews 2:1-4
"Therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it... How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation"....
I try to take notes during worship services so that I can retain more information.
Lucky for you, I am going to share what I gained out of the sermon.
Trust me I'm not this smart: these are the words of our new shepherd.
"We must pay attention to the Gospel in a fallen world, it is our only escape."
There are so many things in this world that demands our attention: our spouse, our children, television, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, our jobs, our commitments
The author of Hebrews was preaching to a Jewish-Christian audience as they too were not paying attention to the great news that Jesus was the Messiah. Hebrews warns Christians that we must pay closer attention because there is an objective truth to be heard- The Bible.
He warned the Jewish-Christians who were "flirting with their faith" that you can not just appreciate Jesus as the messenger and not worship him as your LORD.
The gospel was becoming just another common noise to them- as it does to us.
You could hear our congregation laugh as the Pastor suggested that the word Christian has become a mere adjective in our culture as you might hear someone say, "That wasn't very Christian of you."
We laughed but deep down the truth hurt.
Our actions are not echoing louder than our words.
Pastor Sean asked, how often does God bore us?
How often does the Bible bore us?
We look for fillers to bridge the gap in our day: iPhones, iPads, Facebook, news, work, chores, etc
any excuse to push the Bible away until tomorrow
But tomorrow never comes.
Our Bible sits and collects dust
or is carried into worship like a trophy on Sunday mornings
never taking another peek into its God breathed pages
He directs, if we are bored by the Word then we think too highly of ourselves-
Lest we forget that God sent his son to die for us?
There is no middle ground: Jesus is God's son!
II Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you- unless indeed you fail to meet the test.
* A failure to keep a firm grip on the truth means that you are not the Christian you think you are.
In our own self deception- we loose sight of God.
Am I a worshipper?
Am I in the faith? Am I paying attention in the Gospel?
Or am I a drifter?
The result of not paying attention to the gospel can lead to us drifting away from God's call by simple negligence.
Neglecting to attend worship service. Neglecting to praise Him daily. Neglecting to read the written word. Neglecting to participate in His calling. Neglecting to love others as He has first loved you. Neglecting to forgive as you have once been forgiven.
Drifting by negligence.
True born again Christians have a burning hunger for Christ and an ultimate thirst for the word.
However, when we do not think that we need to be rescued, then we do not seek refuge in Christ.
If we neglect the salvation that Jesus has extended by grace, we will not escape the wrath of God.
Our words and our actions should reflect Christ-
Is the gospel your anchor-
Or are you drifting out to sea?
